President Derdinad Marcos officially declared martial law on September 21, 1972, under the Proclamation no. 1081.
The declaration issued under Proclamation 1081 suspended the civil rights and imposed military authority over the country.
During martial law, the country suffered from poverty, corruption and violence. President Marcos controlled the Philippine military and the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, and other civil liberties. He also ordered the arrest of those who went against his administration.
Some notable personalities who were arrested that time were Senator Jose Diokno, Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. and Senate President Jovito Salonga. Many innocent civilians were arrested as well.
Martial law is considered to be the darkest times in Philippine history.
